Malak, whose dream is to become a nurse, just turned 17. At the beginning of the war, her father was killed and the rest of the family fled their home. Malak was forced to abandon school to take care of her sick mother and her 10-year-old brother who has contracted hepatitis C from lack of sanitary living conditions.

Malak’s mother is getting worse, and Malak can’t afford X-rays or CT scans that could give doctors information to help.

Malak, her mother, and brother now live in a tent in Malwasi Khounis, which has been designated a safe zone yet is continually bombed.
